I posted this essay in a private Facebook group and in a Nextdoor group on June 19, 2021. I’m now reissuing it on Substack so that people will actually be able to find it.
This past Thursday, June 17, President Biden signed legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday in the United States. Juneteenth commemorates that the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves finally began to be enforced in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.

Recognition of this event is clearly overdue. Why is it finally happening now? Well, there are probably many reasons, but one astrological reason that is easy to pick off is that we are now in a Mercury retrograde. Though newer astrologers are sometimes scared of Mercury retrograde, it can actually be a great time to come back to things from the past and correct what was done wrong then.
Like any other event, the original Juneteenth in 1865 has an astrological chart. Astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo said in her podcast about it that she uses a noon chart due to the time being unknown.
Lanyadoo pointed out that the Juneteenth event chart has a prominent Sun-Uranus conjunction opposite Jupiter, which makes a lot of sense for an event about freedom. As for why it is getting attention currently, Lanyadoo noted that transiting Pluto in Capricorn is square Juneteenth’s Saturn-North Node conjunction in Libra about now.
I then ran a solar arc chart for Juneteenth. A solar arc chart is a variant of a progressed chart in which each planet or point moves one degree per year. While progressed and solar arc charts can only move so much in a normal human lifespan, they may be more interesting for historical events that happened a very long time ago, like Juneteenth.
A main point of solar arc analysis is that it is a big deal when a planet or point changes sign. This happens every 30 years for each planet or point.
The current Juneteenth solar arc chart has the Sun at 0° Sagittarius and the North Node at 0° Aries. Both points therefore just changed sign. They do change sign together every 30 years, but this could be one of many factors playing into the current recognition of Juneteenth.
